In a joint effort to combat the rising threat of illegal online gambling, the Dutch Online Gambling Association (VNLOK) and the Dutch Gaming Authority (NOGA) have launched the ‘Meld Vals Spel’ (Report Cheating Hotline). This initiative empowers licensed gambling providers, partner organizations, and other industry stakeholders to report unsafe practices associated with unlicensed gambling sites and apps.
By collecting and analyzing these reports, the hotline aims to gain a deeper understanding of the tactics employed by illegal operators. This knowledge will be instrumental in developing more effective countermeasures and strategies to protect consumers. The information gathered may also be shared with the Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA), policymakers, or social media platforms to facilitate further action and enforcement.
The launch of the ‘Meld Vals Spel’ hotline underscores the growing concern over the risks posed by unlicensed gambling operators. These entities often operate without adhering to strict regulations, potentially leading to harmful consequences for players, including financial loss, addiction, and fraud.
Additionally, the rise of online casino studios has further complicated the regulatory landscape. These studios, which often operate in offshore jurisdictions, may offer games that are not subject to the same level of oversight as those provided by licensed operators. By highlighting the dangers of illegal gambling, VNLOK and NOGA hope to raise awareness and encourage consumers to choose reputable, licensed platforms.
Helma Lodders, Chairwoman of VNLOK, and Eric Konings, Acting Director of NOGA, emphasized the persistent challenge posed by illegal operators, stating, “Many Dutch people still encounter illegal gambling sites and apps. These illegal entities actively circumvent increasingly stringent Dutch regulations by employing tactics such as advertising with terms like ‘playing without limits.’ This strategy specifically targets vulnerable players, endangering their safety and well-being. It is imperative that we address these illegal practices decisively.”
