The Virgin Islands Casino Control Commission (VICCC) and the V.I. Department of Health (VIDOH) have joined forces to tackle problem gambling through a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This significant agreement, signed at the VICCC office in Orange Grove, St. Croix, underscores a shared commitment to addressing gambling-related issues within the territory. As part of the initiative, the VICCC will allocate resources to train and certify seven local counsellors – three on St. Croix, three on St. Thomas, and one on St. John. These professionals will provide targeted counselling to residents grappling with gambling addiction. The training, funded by a 12% tax on casino licensees’ gross earnings, equips the counsellors with expertise in risk factor assessment, suicide prevention, and treatment strategies. Notably, the certifications obtained are recognised internationally by the International Gambling Counselor Certification Board. This partnership reflects a proactive approach to mitigate the challenges associated with gambling in the Virgin Islands. By funding these services, the VICCC aligns with Title 32 V.I. Code Section 517, which mandates casino revenue allocation to programs addressing gambling addiction. The focus extends to preventative measures and support systems, including local initiatives that complement larger trends in the global gaming industry. Marvin L. Pickering, Chair and CEO of the VICCC, emphasised the importance of this milestone: “This transformative journey will not only combat gambling addiction but also foster healthier communities.” The integration of locally trained professionals into this initiative highlights the need for community-driven solutions. For VIDOH Commissioner Justa Encarnacion, the MOU is a step forward in addressing a widespread issue: “In our close-knit community, many have witnessed the effects of gambling addiction on friends and families.
