The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has named James Bidlake as its new Executive Director of Legal and Compliance (EDLC). Bidlake, a legal expert with 25 years of experience, will join the club’s Board of Management, overseeing legal and compliance departments while reporting directly to CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges.
Bidlake’s Career and New Role at HKJC
Bidlake’s career spans leadership roles at Citigroup’s Investment Banking Division, Simmons & Simmons, and Morgan Stanley. Before joining HKJC, he was Group General Counsel and Executive Director at DFS Group, where he managed regulatory and corporate governance strategies.
As HKJC’s new EDLC, Bidlake will be responsible for:
• Legal and compliance oversight
• Protecting HKJC’s branding and reputational rights
• Serving as Company Secretary for the Club
This appointment follows the promotion of Michael Fitzsimons to Executive Director of Wagering Products in 2022. Additionally, HKJC will be required to pay a Special Football Betting Duty tax of HK$2.4bn ($310m) annually until 2028, affecting its financial outlook.
