An urgent investigation has revealed a disturbing rise in illegal online casinos targeting underage gamblers via the popular game development platform, Roblox. The UK Gambling Commission has launched an emergency investigation following a Sky News inquiry into illegal casino studio online platforms. These platforms exploit the game development features of Roblox, luring young users to participate in underage gambling.

How It Works

Roblox users can design and access games using Robux, a virtual currency purchased at around £1 ($1.27) for 100 Robux. Although these casinos for sale are not officially listed on Roblox, they leverage Roblox credentials to target underage players. Once registered on an illegal casino, players can convert their Robux into casino chips for betting on live dealer games such as slots. Winnings are converted into cryptocurrency, which can then be exchanged for cash.

Data and Impact

One such illegal casino, BloxFlip (now shut down), recorded shocking data:

A 14-year-old gambled £52,000.
A 16-year-old spent £175,000.

The investigation identified three major platforms—BloxFlip, Bloxmoon, and RBLXWild—operating under the guise of low-cost casino studios. Combined, these platforms attract 2.8 million monthly visitors, taking millions in bets each month.

Roblox’s Response

Roblox faces legal scrutiny as evidence emerges showing the company’s awareness of these platforms since March 2022. Despite issuing takedown requests, illegal casinos persisted, leading to a lawsuit from parents of affected children. A spokesperson for the Gambling Commission stated:

“Illegal gambling is serious, and we’re deeply concerned. In recent months, we’ve taken down more than 250 websites and removed over 75,000 URLs. Parents must remain vigilant about their children’s online activities.”
