Foxtel Breaches Gambling Advertising Regulations During AFL Broadcast

An investigation by ACMA has found that Foxtel breached Australian gambling advertising regulations after airing a live studio gambling ad without an adequate responsible gambling message during an AFL match in April 2024.

Gambling Ad Violations During Live Sports Coverage

During the live broadcast of the Port Adelaide vs. Essendon match, a virtual gambling ad aired without meeting the subscription TV code of practice requirements. The absence of a proper responsible gambling message resulted in regulatory action against Foxtel Cable Television.

Under the regulations, all casino studio online gambling advertisements during live dealer sports events must include clear warnings about gambling risks. ACMA authority member Carolyn Lidgerwood reinforced the importance of compliance, stating:

“These messages must highlight the risks of gambling. Simply displaying an ‘18+’ logo is not sufficient.”

Foxtel’s Response & Regulatory Compliance

Upon discovery of the breach, Foxtel took corrective action, ensuring that all future advertisements include the required responsible gambling tagline. The company has also committed to additional compliance training to prevent future violations.

This incident follows a separate ACMA ruling against Network Ten (Sydney) for a similar breach during the 2024 Australia Formula 1 Grand Prix, reflecting a growing focus on live dealer and casino studio online advertising regulations.

As the Evolution games and game developers market continues to expand, broadcasters must remain vigilant to ensure that gambling-related ads align with industry standards. With increasing scrutiny on casinos for sale and roulette low-cost live studio promotions, compliance remains a top priority for gaming operators and broadcasters alike.
